SECURING THE BUOY TO THE VESSEL

This picture shows the buoy secured to the bow of the boat.

The buoy has been lifted somewhat to enable access to the mooring ring. This arrangement also helps prevent the barnacle encrusted buoy from damaging the boat.

This closeup shows a rope that has been run through the ring on the buoy. One end has been secured to a cleat while the other end has been pulled to lift the buoy towards the bow roller. This end is then also cleated off. The Mooring Captor can then be unclipped from the ring and removed.

The buoy is also attached to the vessel by a chain for additional security. Note the shackles joining the chain. The boat hook head fitted to the handle is useful in picking up the buoy chain.

This view shows the rope attached to the starboard cleat, run through the ring and cleated off to the port cleat.

The chain attaching the boat to the buoy consists of two pieces. One piece is attached to the bow cleat and the other piece is shackled to the mooring. When the rope pulls the buoy ring up to the bow roller, the two pieces of chain are shackled together. The lengths of the chains are arranged so that they are within easy reach and have a degree of slack when the rope is pulled up.

When leaving the mooring, the chain is unshackled first and then the cleated off end of the rope is released.
